The Role of AI in Continuous Feedback and Learner Support
Continuous feedback and learner support are vital for achieving successful learning outcomes with workplace learning. They ensure that learners stay engaged, motivated, and on the right track, ultimately leading to a more effective and enjoyable learning experience.
But how do you provide continuous feedback and support remotely? For individuals each with different learning objectives and timescales? AI capabilities are playing a transformative role in making continuous feedback and support a reality for all online learners within an organisation.
Automated Engagement
Some learning platforms can provide encouraging notifications based on a learner’s progress and successes. The platform will assess both the progress and performance of each learner and automatically send encouraging messages to keep the learner on track.
The most effective form of automated engagement is automated nudges when they are needed. For example if a learner needs to complete a learning initiative by a certain date, the nudges can be activated. Thus helping to ensure staff complete their learning objectives in time, without the need for human intervention. It can provide appropriate nudges based on a learner’s progress.

Real-Time Feedback
To provide real-time feedback on a learner’s progress and performance, is only possible with a platform that has learning workflows. A learning workflow can be set up for a specific learning need, with a range of learning activities from courses to videos and more, all in one place (see vLearning). When learning is made accessible in such a format, the learner can easily see how they are progressing through their learning objective against their deadline.
Perhaps more importantly is the feedback on their ability to apply the learning. A learning workflow contains the ability to assess performance, such as quizzes, assignments, coaching and other activities. This helps learners to see their mistakes and improve their understanding and application of the learning. Some of this feedback can be instantaneous, such as quizzes. Other forms of feedback can be more personalised through individual feedback on assignments and virtual coaching.
The ability to track performance and provide feedback, provide real-time visibility for the Learning Manager. Virtual Tutors
It is also possible to create AI-powered virtual tutors who offer personalised support and instruction, helping learners understand complex concepts and stay on track with their studies.
This is not yet a commonly used function in learning platforms and should be implemented with caution due to risk of ‘disengagement’ due to AI content lethargy. At present we at vLearning do not feel that the capabilities of virtual tutors are yet fit for purpose. As such we have implemented all of the above as a more effective intervention for learners to enable their application of learning.
However, we expect to see virtual tutor capabilities improve in the coming years.
